Money Sent to Wrong UPI? What to Do Immediately
Money Sent to Wrong UPI? What to Do Immediately
Sent money to the wrong UPI ID by mistake? Don't panic, but act quickly. A successful UPI payment usually cannot simply be cancelled from the app after completion. Your best chance is to immediately report the transaction to your UPI app and bank and request a reversal.
First rule: Do not wait for the recipient to notice the mistake. Raise the complaint immediately and keep the transaction ID, amount, date and recipient UPI ID ready.
1. Check the Transaction Status
Open your UPI app and check whether the payment is Successful, Pending or Failed. Take a screenshot of the transaction immediately.
Save these details:
• UPI Transaction ID / UTR
• Amount transferred
• Date and time
• Wrong UPI ID / recipient details
• Screenshot of the successful payment
2. Raise a Complaint in Your UPI App
Go to your transaction history, open the incorrect payment and select the available Help, Raise Complaint, Report Issue or Dispute option. Choose the reason that best matches the situation, such as an incorrect transfer.
The exact menu name can differ between UPI apps, so follow the complaint option provided by your app. Keep the complaint/reference number for future follow-up.
3. Contact Your Bank Immediately
Don't rely only on the UPI app. Contact the bank account from which the money was debited and explain that a successful UPI payment was sent to the wrong recipient.
Important: Ask your bank to register the complaint and initiate the appropriate recovery/reversal process. A successful payment made to the wrong UPI ID is different from a failed transaction that is automatically reversed.
4. Contact the Recipient — Carefully
If the recipient's details are visible, you may politely contact them and explain that the payment was sent accidentally. Ask them to return the exact amount through the appropriate channel.
Never share your UPI PIN, OTP, card details or banking password while trying to recover your money. You don't need to approve a “refund” by entering your UPI PIN to receive money.
If this was a scam or unauthorised transaction: Treat it as a cyber-fraud case rather than simply a wrong transfer. Report it immediately through your bank and the national cybercrime reporting system. In India, financial cyber fraud can be reported by calling 1930 or through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.
What NOT to Do
❌ Don't wait several days before reporting the mistake.
❌ Don't share OTP, UPI PIN or card details with anyone.
❌ Don't install a remote-access app because someone promises a refund.
❌ Don't send another payment to “unlock” or “receive” your refund.
❌ Don't delete transaction screenshots or complaint references.
